Answer:  There is no conscious crossing over at death.  At death our spirit returns to the Creator that made us.  God reminds us through the word of King Solomon that we are mortal and made of dust.  Ecclesiastes 12:7, "Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it."   The Bible is not clear as to where the spirit goes or to how God saves our spirit.

The Bible is clear that the dead know nothing, which would indicate no spiritual consciousness.  In Ecclesiasties 9:5 we read, "For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing…"

In John 3:13 the Bible says, “No man has ascended into heaven except he who came down from Heaven.”  The Bible says that that even King David is not in heaven.  Acts 2:29;34 (KJV) "'Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher is with us unto this day'...'For David is not ascended into the heavens.'"

King David and all those who have died are still dead and buried asleep in the grave awaiting a time when they will be resurrected and potentially to eternal life.  Nobody except Jesus Christ and the Father along with the Heavenly host are in heaven at this time.
